Welcome to our 16th Enneagram conversation. This episode was all about Instinctual Variants. During our enneagram journeys we have come to see that the instinctual variants (or subtypes) are just as significant and helpful to understand as understanding your number.
If you’re just starting to understand the variants here is how Beatrice Chestnut introduces the concept in “The Complete Enneagram” (one of the main books we constantly recommend on the pod):
” Subtypes exist within each of the nine types, broken down into three distinct versions according to how the passion of each type combines with one of three instinctual biases or goals that all social creatures share, directed toward Self- Preservation, Social Interaction, or Sexual (or One-to-One Bonding.
When the passion and the dominant instinctual drive come together, they create an even more specific focus of attention, reflecting a particular insatiable need that drives behavior. These subtypes thus reflect three different ‘subsets’ of the patterns of the nine types that provide even more specificity in describing the human personality.” (From The Complete Enneagram by Beatrice Chestnut, PhD).
This particular episode was broken up into three parts.
Part 1 and intro to variants
Part 2- Scott talked about what its like to be a Sexual/ Self- Prez 5 with a social blind spot.
Part 3- Macie talked about what it’s like to be a Social/ Sexual 4 with a Self-Prez blind spot.
We talked about a lot of different resources throughout this episode and we want to give the links to those resources here!
The first is possibly the BEST and most thorough resource around when it comes to learning about variants and STACKINGS (or sequence as Enneagram for Idiots says). This website is called oceanmoonshine9 and there really just is no competition in terms of breadth of information. So we hope you enjoy exploring this page! https://oceanmoonshine9.wordpress.com/type-stackings/
The next resource is a great intro episode to variants by Enneagram for Idiots (one of our favorite enneagram podcasts because Marisa and Tara are just so funny). https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/introduction-to-the-instincts-a-new-series-episode-44/id1338051017?i=1000446246215
Next is another podcast episode that introduces the variants. This is a new enneagram podcast for us called Probably the Enneagram. Its super good and the co-hosts also have a really pleasant dynamic. Super different from Enneagram for Idiots. Here is their episode on Variants! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/instinctual-variants-plus-a-surprise-interview/id1436766083?i=1000420136886
Finally Scott talked about a podcast episode with a sexual 5 from The Enneagram Journey with Suzanne Stabile (the godmother of The Enneagram!) that he found super helpful and cathartic! Here’s THAT episode! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-72-stephanie-hewitt-enneagram-5/id1292950516?i=1000460204887
That’s it for this week! Of course- we also recommend checking out OUR past episodes for more enneagram content (and share with your people when you get a chance!). We love to chat with you all so please feel free to e-mail thoughts or questions at firstname.lastname@example.org or DM us on instagram.
